Peter Daniel Hilty, age 87, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2008. He was born July 16, 1921, the son of Peter P. and Barbara Koller Hilty.
On August 16, 1969, he married Nancy Wismer. They have one son, Daniel Peter Hilty and daughter-in-law, Kristen Celeste Hicks Hilty.
Peter received his MA from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1951, and his Ph.D. from the same University in 1958.
He was an English professor. He taught one year at Arkansas State, and four years at Park College in Parkville, before going to Southeast State University in 1964.
He served on Cape City Council from 1982 to 1988, was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, and a member of Rotary Club.
His hobbies were reading, poetry, history of family names, carpentry, and music.
In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by one sister, Dorothy Baumgartner of Versailles; one brother, Calvin Hilty of Porterville, California; two grandchildren, Elijah Tate and Magdalene Caroline; and many nieces and nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Carl, Hiram, and Paul, and sisters, Esther and Winifred.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, December 7, at the Bethel Mennonite Church near Versailles with Reverend Dave Zapf officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Bethel Mennonite Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the church, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
