She was born on March 9, 1926 to Edna Emilie Saak Keune and Herman Julius Keune in Hermann, MO in Gasconade County. She was married to Wesley N Brewer on November 16, 1944 in Hayward, CA. He preceded her in death, November 14, 2010.
Between the ages of 14 and 18, LaVern worked in a restaurant, cotton factory and a can factory, all in the St Louis area. She then met Wesley and moved to California and they were married. When Wesley was stationed overseas in World War II, LaVern moved back to the St Louis area and worked at the Alligator Coat Co. until the war ended. They then moved to the Kirksville, MO area where they farmed row crops and raised cattle. LaVern also worked for Lambert Manufacturing for 18 years and Hollisters for 20 years during that time. She was an active member of her church and a long-time supporter of the Kirksville Bible School.
In 1995 LaVern and Wesley moved to Versailles where she helped her son and daughter in law at the Conoco and 52 Diner until 2000. She then worked at the Versailles Nutrition Site until 2011. She attended Bethel Mennonite Church.
LaVern will be remembered for her staunch work ethic and her amazing abilities to accomplish whatever task was before her. She enjoyed being productive and helpful to those around her. Her many talents include her marvelous cooking, canning, gardening and embroidery and visiting the sick. She was skilled in all areas of farm work as well.
LaVern is survived by one son, Wayne Brewer and his wife, Jacquie of Versailles; three grandchildren, Chris Brewer and wife Kristi of Sedalia, Betsy Nichols and husband Jason of Centralia and Jeff Brewer of Kirksville; four step-grandchildren, Tony Stephens and wife Missy of Versailles, Brent Stephens and wife Emily of Carlsbad, CA, Lori Mott and husband Kevin of Honolulu, HI and Jodi Stephens of Columbia, eleven great- grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Evelyn Schirmer of Ellisville, MO, and three brothers, Herman (Sonny) Keune and Victor Keune of Ellisville, MO and Glen Keune of Marthasville, MO and many other relatives, friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents, LaVern was preceded in death by a sister, Leota Schindler, and two brothers, Vernon Keune and Robert Keune and two infant brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 24, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Versailles Nutrition Site or to Bethel Mennonite Church.
